On 4 September 1942 Chaim Rumkowski asked the Lodz ghetto to hand over children and the elderly, saying limbs must be cut off to save the body. Lodz was the last ghetto liquidated; in August 1944, 70,000 Jews still remained, and the Red Army halted 75 miles from the city.
