During the twentieth century's first five or six decades, archaeologists believed several discoveries attested Solomon: Megiddo stables, a Red Sea port and Hazor fortifications. These finds appeared to make Solomon's age Israel's earliest securely historical period, until scholarly agreement broke down. In recent decades the consensus has broken down. Some archaeologists see something real in the biblical description of the kingdoms of David and Solomon, pointing to impressive structures they say prove an Israelite state in the tenth century BCE; others think the finds once attributed to that period were misinterpreted and belong to other ages. There is still no clear, incontrovertible evidence of Solomon's reign, not even of his temple.
