The following year Muhammad moved against the oasis of Khaybar, where certain of the Jews expelled from Medina had resettled. The battle ended with the Jews surrendering, accepting the victors' terms and handing over half their produce in return for peace. This set an important precedent for how Jews and Christians were treated in places conquered by Muhammad and, later, by his successors. In 628 Medina's Muslim community beat Khaybar's Jewish residents, who yielded and received guarantees for their lives and goods against a yearly levy. The precedent was confirmed by a later revelation, verse 9:29, the classic proof text in Islamic law for relations with the 'people of the book'. The Qur'an mandated the state's political expansion but forbade using force to spread the religion (2:256).
