Statement
The commandments are wide in scope. They include directions for constructing the Tabernacle, where God was believed to be present, rules about the Sabbath and other holy days, prohibitions on foods and sexual conduct, and laws for running the courts and caring for the needy. Observing them was vital to the tie with God: it gave Israel title to Canaan and guaranteed, or brought back, divine protection.
