Statement
The first prophets of the monarchy, Samuel and Nathan under David and Elijah and Elisha in the northern kingdom, seem to have left no writings, although Jewish tradition credits Samuel with 1 and 2 Samuel. With the Assyrian conquest, certain prophets or their disciples began committing prophecies to writing, which is how the Major and Minor Prophets came to exist.
