Statement

A rabbinic story, probably legendary but revealing, makes rabbinic culture the heir of Yohanan ben Zakkai. Opposed to the revolt, he supposedly left Jerusalem inside a coffin and put himself, and his tradition, in Roman hands rather than die alongside the rebels.
