Statement
In Jewish antiquity 'rabbi' ('my teacher') was a respectful form of address that disciples used for sages, judges and teachers, Jesus among them. In this chapter the word has a narrower sense: it designates members of a network of sages formed after the Second Temple was destroyed, the one that appears in the Mishnah, the Talmud and related texts.
