ZAKHORIUM

Statement

It has often been said that Jewish communities enjoyed legal autonomy under Islam. But in the conditions reflected in the Genizah documents, each individual dhimmi was personally liable for remitting his own poll tax to the state; the government consulted Christian and Jewish leaders in assessing the overall tax burden, but the community did not collect that tax (practice may have differed elsewhere and in other periods).
