Statement
With the Geonim's prestige behind them, responsa linked the most remote communities, which could use their arguments to settle questions of prayer, business, divorce, dowries and inheritance. Sustaining such correspondence over long distances owed much to the Islamic empire, which joined the great majority of medieval Jews under a common legal system and a shared Arabic-speaking culture.
