Within medieval Islamic culture, Maimonides's philosophy earned wide esteem. After Samuel ibn Tibbon rendered the Guide from Arabic into Hebrew, in 1204, Jewish readers in Christian Europe came to know it as well. Some adopted rational philosophy, and Jewish Aristotelian thinking thrived among scholars in northern Spain and southern France, Levi ben Gershon (That Gersonides) of fourteenth-century Provence being the most notable example.
